Hi,
Following the removal of the BBC News Mobile apps from the store I will be removing the service supporting the live tile functionality on Windows Phone 7.x and Windows 8. This will be completed in two phases.
- To avoid confusion, on these platforms, users will receive the following in place of the live tile.
- The service will be disabled and no further updates will be delivered to the live tiles.
If you have received this message please remove the live tile from your home screen and disable the background task to avoid unnecessary data and battery usage on your phone.
This is being completed as, on the older versions of the phone application, the live tiles are downloaded from a web service which I host. As part of the apps removal this service will be taken down. I have included the message to allow users time to remove the tile before the service is turned off.
This does not affect Windows Phone 8 as the tiles are generated by the app on a background service.
Lastly I’d like to say thanks to all those who have contacted me with your comments, support and jokes – they are all much appreciated.
For reference:
Thank you for all your hard work. I am really disappointed to how the BBC is handling this. I will be sure to notify them of my opinion. Good luck. A bb news app user
I’d like to take this moment to say thank you and wish you well.
You did everyone using WP a great service and you seem to be an exceptionally charitable person.
I’m sorry, sad and extremely disappointed that the powers that be made you take this down especially when they do not have any substitute to the huge gap they just created in the WP ecosystem. This seems to be a decision driven by malice because other, less than exceptional, BBC readers were allowed to continue.
Good luck in all your future endeavours.
Crap, only news app i use! Cab you not just rebrand it 😦
I am sorry to see that you have been forced to withdraw the BBC News live tile app for Windows Phone. This was truly my most frequently used app and I hope it returns sometime soon. In the meantime, thanks for providing such a wonderful app which was a useful tool for many.
Gutted that it has come to this, have been using your app since I first got my windows phone and use it all the time. Really annoyed the bbc has taken this route. Thanks for the great app it was good while it lasted.
Cheers for the great app mate, has to have been one of the most used apps on my phone. The bbc seem to be taking a route of being complete asses, they should not have made you remove the app, as it is the only decent one out on the wp market.
Wonderful app, i am enraged that you have had to removed it. I would encourage everyone to complain to the BBC about the situation and the void that is now waiting for them to fill. I certainly know someone who could help them out!
All the best in the future.
This has been my favourite most used app. I use it at least 6 times daily. Now what ? May as well get an iPhone now you are fading this out 😦 Thank you for all your hard work for such an awesome app. Much appreciated. Regards, Alex Player
What a weak reason to get an iPhone…
Thanks for all your hard work. The BBC News app has made WP for me. I am shortly upgrading my phone and this makes the decision to look at other platforms so much simpler, especially as there are so many limitations with Flash, etc on WP. Such a shame.
Just want to say thanks
Really sad to see this go.
However, is there any chance of pushing through an update to send it back to just the plain icon? I’d still like to put this on my homescreen even without the updates, but the blue icon looks ugly!
What a shame. It’s the only news app I installed i my W8 notebook.
Thank you for such a wonderful app.
Hope you will make more great apps in the future.
Thank you for releasing this app and spending your time on it. Like everyone else I am very disappointed with the BBC.
I have the xap file so the Beeb can go away, i installed into a friends new 820 yesterday, no issues. Thank god for SD cards! Its such a shame the app has to go, ive used it since wp7, its always been in my second row of tiles and in on my third wp handset, still in the second row on my lumia 620. You are forever a legend, and if the bbc had any sense theyd take the app code and make it official. Btw, did the toast notifications cease? Ive not had one for weeks now, used to get breaking news through quite often 😦
This was simply the best news app for Win 8 / Modern UI. And it made the BBC look good!
What are they planning to achieve – charge for stuff they deliver for free? I don’t get it.
Many thanks for your endeavours, and for showing everyone else how it should be done.
